In this online course, you'll learn to play and experiment with your art supplies. Each module starts with a warm-up exercise to get your creativity flowing, and then progresses to more advanced lessons exploring individual mixed media techniques.  

Beyond the Garden: Exploring Nature with Mixed Media is a playful and experimental course, where I guide you through mixed-media techniques for nature sketching, exploring colour, texture, and expressive pages inspired by the natural world.

Course Content

Module 1: Introduction 
Course overview and materials and supplies

Module 2: The Sky Above Us
With the sky and all of its moods as our inspiration, we'll explore watery media, learning to work with imperfections to create beautiful imagery.

Module 3: Night Garden
Inspired by themes of darkness and light and a garden at night, we'll explore mark making and resist techniques.

Module 4: The Beach
With the textures and shapes found at the seaside, we learn techniques for collage and layering materials.

Module 5: Under the Sea
Basic print making techniques form the basis of this module as we look at repetition and pattern.

Module 6: Trees
We'll look at depicting trees from both far away and close up, learning to not get too caught up in the details.

Module 7: The Forest Floor
Learn how to create interesting textures using surprising supplies.

Module 8: A Floral Sampler
In this final module we explore basic bookbinding and create a sampler sketchbook containing all the techniques we have tried.
