My Sketchbooks

My Sketchbooks

I'm sure I'll be mentioning my sketchbooks a lot on here. I try to spend time in them everyday. I love to look back through them whenever I'm feeling at a loss for what to paint or draw, or if I need some inspiration for a client project.

They are my most treasured possession, being so full of memories and ideas and feelings. I can remember where I was on the day that I drew on that page. I see the details and colours and textures that past Katie was interested in back then.

I just love to spend time drawing in these books, quietly observing the colours, textures and shapes found in the natural world. Playing with all of my art supplies and filling the pages with plants, flowers, butterflies and birds.

At the moment I'm working on my first online course that is all about creating a garden sketchbook. An unexpected bonus of designing and filming all the modules is that I'm having to really look at how I actually use a sketchbook. By turning the intuitive into something concrete for my students, I'm documenting the things I do when I don't know what to draw. Or how I tackle a complex garden scene. How I record colour palettes I see in the wild for use in later pieces.
